It's harvest time here on the farm. We grow three main crops, barley, wheat and beans. The combine harvester is our biggest machine and although it is only used for a couple of months a year it is the most important by far. In order to collect the seeds from the fields the crops must be in the perfect condition, ideally the sun will be shining and the combine will be rolling for around fourteen hours a
day for most of July and August.

As a family we love harvest, it means constant tractor spotting, combine rides and lots of action in the farm yard. Everyone gets involved with cousins driving tractors and uncles manning the weigh bridge.

Once the seed has been collected by the combine harvester the straw is left on the ground ready to be baled into big straw bales. These are used on our dairy farms for bedding in the winter. Some of it is is also sold to other farmers for their animals.

All of this work relies upon good weather and plenty of dry days so we are always keeping an eye on the weather forecast and just like everyone else we will be hoping for an excellent summer!
